Lies, Corruption, and Death in the Nevada Department of Corrections

deathNewspapers within Nevada picked up the story about Timothy Redman’s death and, as we at MTWT and others, knew their “journalism” would be in the defense of the NDOC and would not be the truth in its entirety. The NDOC gives the public what they want us to hear, what they want us to think is the truth. The employees of the NDOC don’t want the public to know what goes on behind the walls of these prisons. The truth will never be heard unless a complete and total federal investigation into the death of Mr. Redman is done. Even then we have to wonder if the entire truth will be told. It is the nature of the NDOC to start a cover-up as soon as an incident happens.

Some of the local newspapers wrote short articles to satisfy the public because of what our site and other sites have published in aftermath of Mr. Redman’s death. People wanted to hear the “official” story. The “official” story has not been touched in the five articles that I have read. All we see in these articles are reporters, Sheriff Watts, and Suzanne Pardee giving the spin we knew would be published. Does anyone really think that the Warden, the administrative staff, or the guards are going to tell you, “Yes we sprayed Mr. Redman with 5 or 6 large cans of pepper spray in a locked cell that had no ventilation”. “Yes, he said to us that if we didn’t stop he was going to hang himself”. “Yes, with even knowing he was telling us this we continued to spray him with mace.” “Yes, we saw him hang himself and instead of trying to stop him, we sprayed him again”. No! They are going to tell you just what they want you to hear: Mr. Redman brandished a prison made “shank” and barricaded his door so no one could get in to stop him from hanging himself.

When the stories appeared in the Las Vegas Sun, The Reno Gazette Journal, Las Vegas Review Journal, Nevada Appeal, and The Ely Times we weren’t at all shocked they said an investigation is pending but at the same time, only one paper mentioned the pepper spray used to start the wheels in motion that caused a man to die. We were also not shocked when they focused on the crime that Mr. Redman was convicted of instead of talking about and asking important questions that the public would like to know the answers to.

For example, you can’t comment on the amount of pepper spray used, but can you at least comment on the fact that it was used on Mr. Redman?

We at MTWT know pepper spray was used as we know right now, they can’t even move another inmate into his cell because it has so much pepper spray on the interior of the cell it is uninhabitable. It would be like living in a toxic waste site.

Another good question would have been, to investigate how these doors inside the prison open. These doors are not made to keep guards out of the cell, but the inmate in. The steel doors used inside the prison slide open from the outside. Which means the door is located completely on the outside of the wall and not on the inside of the cell at all. Can you please explain to me and the public how it is possible for someone to barricade this door? Can you show us by demonstration how this is possible?

Another good question would be, how was Mr. Redman able to obtain a prison made “shank” and hide it with being in solitary confinement? He is searched before leaving the cell, getting to his location, before leaving his location and again before being placed back in the cell. His cell is searched according to NDOC regulations and never was this “shank” found? While out of his cell he is cuffed at the hands and feet, allowed on a single man yard, and watched in the shower, how could he possibly find a rod big enough to barricade a steel door shut? Where did this rod come from? As we know the yard where the death row inmates are allowed has a 12 foot or higher concrete wall surrounding it and not a cyclone fence.

How long did Mr. Redman remain hanging before the door was taken down and CPR attempted? Was CPR even attempted?

In all the time that Mr. Redman has been housed within the NDOC has he ever attempted to commit suicide before, if so how many times and how? Also, how was he able to be stopped those times from completing the act?

Why would a man in the act of committing suicide need to be sprayed with mace by guards of ESP? If he is in the process of taking his own life would pepper spray change his mind?

Were the guards involved in this incident placed on administrative leave until a full investigation has been completed? If it found they acted in an illegal manner will criminal charges be filed?

Who gave the order to continue to spray Mr. Redman with pepper spray? Who gave the order not to enter that cell after he was hanging? Are these people on administrative leave pending the investigation?

Has any of the inmates that witnessed this event been asked what they saw, heard or anything; has anyone taken the time to question them and get statements from them? The Warden, the Assistant Warden, the Sheriff, the deputy coroner were not there at the time this took place.

These are just a few of the questions people should be demanding to be answered. As some people would hate to admit, or even say, these are human beings and they were convicted of a crime by a jury of their peers and sentenced by the guidelines and the laws of Nevada. This in no way gives the employees to right to go against the law and hurry it along with a sentence of death.

It is said best from this comment on one of the many stories we have published about Mr. Redman’s untimely death – “This is murder by the state by means of a gas chamber, they choose to take it upon themselves to perform an execution without a warrant, there has got to be a price to pay for this…”CeeCee

Unless you are touched by the NDOC like the loved ones of the inmates, you will never really know or even care about the horrors inside the walls. It is not the loved ones coddling their inmates, it’s not the activist that are called bleeding hearts, it’s not the public with a conscience, it’s the true horror of having to live with fear if your loved one will be the next one that the NDOC feels needs to be done away with because they don’t want to deal with them any longer. Just as the loved one of the employees of the NDOC wants their loved ones to come home at night, the loved ones of the inmates want them to come home one day safe and sound too.

Just as you dread a phone call telling you something has happened to your beloved family member at the hands of an inmate, the family and loved ones of the inmates have the same fear but from the hands of guards. If people think that ESP is the only prison without abuse, then you seriously need to get youcartoon2r head checked because you are really in need of some serious medication. ESP has the largest amount of lawsuits than any other prison in Nevada; ESP gets more complaints than any other prison in Nevada. Wake up people, Ely is not housing a prison to boost your economy and give you jobs, they are housing a torture chamber that you are allowing to continue because you got the “official” story that was more of a spin to cover up a horrible event to keep you thinking they are the best of the best.

We at MTWT find the stories written in the media about Mr. Redman’s death laughable at best. It was just what we knew they would be, and nothing more. If you want the “official” story, then please, along with us, demand a federal investigation. Demand that the NDOC release all the facts surrounding the death of Mr. Redman and not just accept that he banished a prison made knife, barricaded his door and then hung himself. Demand more of your public officials that you pay for with your hard earned tax dollars. You think the inmates of Nevada are a drain on your tax dollars, you are sadly wrong, it’s the officials that you wait to tell you what is what, it’s the lawsuits filed, it’s the death of these inmates at the hands of the sadistic bullies that like the power they have over another human’s life.

DEMAND MORE! DEMAND THE TRUTH!

DEMAND A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION!

STOP SETTLING FOR JUST THE “OFFICIAL” STORY!

    Lucy:

You certainly write a compelling story and you need to be applauded for your sincerity and truthfulness. Nevada is a disgrace to the free world, but I fear the free world is just a phase from the past. It has no creditability any longer.

Mr. Redman was murdered. The official spin is in the works. Small space, weapon, no entry into cell, toxic cell, prison commander support in the aid of a suicide, blockade of a prison cell door–is the best fantasy I’ve heard in years. One would think, with Good Ole Oklahoma fat blob of poly saturated grease–he’d have more experience in telling this compelling story.

With your permission I will take to the Las Vegas, Nevada Federal Bureau of Investigation, your two letter describing this murder and file the report. Any one caring to join me is welcome. Contact me at spartacusproject@yahoo.com or call (702)740-0402.

Now is your chance to become actively involved in bringing some justice to the citizen’s of Nevada.

    Mr. Hinton,

Please by all means take anything you wish and submit it to any place you feel it could possibly help.

I have to agree, Nevada is a disgrace and it’s more like a world of it’s own. I have never seen a place that takes justice and makes such a mockery out of it and thinks it’s ok to do so because they have got away with it for so long.

I saw the spin start as soon as I heard about the death of Mr. Redman. I was curious as to what it would be, but never did I think it would be a single man able to barricade a STEEL door shut. I can’t say that I was even in least shocked. However, the citizens will take that excuse, lie, and cover-up as the “official” story and know in their hearts that the NDOC didn’t do anything wrong.

I did want to say thank you for your comment about my writing, but I don’t feel that I can be applauded until something is actually done and the warden and director has been replaced and an oversight committee is put into place in Nevada. There will be no glory better than to see those people locked up in the same place they feel it’s OK to torture another human being to death. I just hope the words I write will cause more to act with passion and help in the struggles of this horrible situation.
